Being At Srishti, Semester 2 (Jan- April)

Illustration for communication- 3D style!

So my first course of this semester was illustration again, with a difference. a WHOLE lot of difference. I am quite petrified of the word 3D, maybe because i haven't done too much in this field, and i remember very negative feelings after doing 3Ds Max, during my under grad study.

For this course we were made to go through a list of 700 Hobo names compiled by John Hodgeman. Here is the list. After going through them, we were made to pick out any two names and illustrate those characters following a process of mind mapping and then creating a story around this name and giving them quirks and ticks. We then had to sketch them out on paper. We were also made to sketch out their expressions based on a list of expressions that most illustrators use.

After our characters were sketched out with their details and a strong story and a strong expression, we shifted base from our classroom to the terrace of our college. Spreading out blue tarpolene sheets we began working with wire and a mix of newspaper and flour to make our masks.

The first step involves using GI wire along with binding wire to make the initial structure, its like the skeleton.

In the second step we make a mixture of fevicol, atta (flour), and water and dip news paper strips into this mixture and start creating layers, then periodically dry them out and make new layers.

After the basic structure hardened, i used tissue for an even base which also provided a good texture to my mask. And then gave that a white wash with acrylic paint.

And then we illustrated all the features on to our mask, and created their hairstyle and added props.

This is how it ended up looking, and i was pretty pleased, considering this was my first time!

Also, its been decided that these masks will be put up at Srishti! So yay! :)
